How to track consulting and interim assignments
As a freelance consultant or interim professional you rarely have one search running. Brokers, agencies and your own network all send you assignments at the same time, often for the same end client. Without an overview you lose track of who offered you where, at which rate.
1. Record the end client, not only the broker
Brokers sometimes keep the end client vague. Write down the end client as soon as you know it, and the broker or agency that offered you. That way you see immediately when a second broker pitches the same assignment.
2. Never get offered twice to the same client
Being proposed to the same client by two brokers can cost you the assignment. Before you agree to a new proposal, check your list for the client name. Career Compass HQ warns you while you type and shows the existing assignment, the broker and the date.
3. Keep your rate per assignment
Note the hourly or day rate you quoted for each assignment. When the client comes back later, or another broker asks, you know exactly what you offered.
4. Follow up on proposals
Brokers are busy. If you hear nothing after a week or two, a short message helps. Plan the follow-up date when you agree to a proposal.
5. Keep your network in one place
Account managers, recruiters and hiring managers move between companies. Keeping contacts and your conversation history together makes your next assignment easier to find.
